Marijuana may cause erectile dysfunction

While marijuana may hold a myriad of health benefits, one researcher believes that pot may actually be detrimental to sexual health.

While past studies have hailed using cannabis to enhance sexual activity, sex researcher Justin Lehmiller details in a recent Playboy article how pot may cause whiskey dick’s equally annoying cousin — weed dick.

“Consistent with the idea that higher doses of cannabis may be problematic, research has found that the prevalence of erectile dysfunction is three times as high for daily marijuana smokers compared to those who don’t use it at all,” Lehmiller says.

Lehmiller cites animal studies showing that cannabis can have an inhibitory effect on certain receptors inside the erectile tissue of a penis, although those same studies have not yet been researched in humans.

The researcher also goes on to debunk claims that smoking pot makes men last longer during sex.

“While the conclusion that marijuana helps guys last longer in bed is tempting, we cannot rule out the possibility that this drug simply alters men’s perception of time,” Lehmiller wrote. “In other words, sex might seem to last longer when you’re high, but the actual amount of time you spend having sex might not really be any different from when you’re sober.”

Lehmiller, however, doesn’t completely discount using marijuana to enhance sex, but believes it’s all about moderate dosage.

“If you consume marijuana or alcohol in small quantities, the inhibitory effects on sexual performance tend to be pretty minimal,” says Lehmiller. “In fact, you may actually experience an overall performance boost with low doses due to these drugs lowering inhibitions and stimulating desire.”
